Summary

For a family trying to make an isolated farmhouse into a home, fear and rage are getting harder to control in a primal short story by the New York Times bestselling author of Whisper Network and Cutting Teeth

The Strauss family is on knife’s edge。 Sam is a resentful stay-at-home dad。 Rachel feels the restlessness in her blood returning。 Their children are getting out of hand。 And a recent mudslide has forced the wolves out of the woods to look for food。 As dusk falls and tensions rise, the family must come together to survive the night—from the threats outside and those within。

Chandler Baker’s "Big Bad" is part of Creature Feature , a collection of devilishly creepy stories that tingle the spine and twist the mind。 They can be read or listened to in one petrifying sitting。

I'm reading the Creature Feature Collection "out of order" (which I assume is irrelevant?) because I want to save my favorite of the authors--Grady Hendrix--for last。 Having never read Chandler Baker before, I figured I'd start here (and as a longtime Buffy fan, "Big Bad" is a title that immediately appeals to me), and I'm definitely glad I did。 Here's hoping that the other five titles in this series match Baker's effort; although it's not the most original concept, her monstrous yarn is effecti I'm reading the Creature Feature Collection "out of order" (which I assume is irrelevant?) because I want to save my favorite of the authors--Grady Hendrix--for last。 Having never read Chandler Baker before, I figured I'd start here (and as a longtime Buffy fan, "Big Bad" is a title that immediately appeals to me), and I'm definitely glad I did。 Here's hoping that the other five titles in this series match Baker's effort; although it's not the most original concept, her monstrous yarn is effectively told with ample doses of pervasive dread and gory action, all happening to/around a flawed but likable family trying to survive the night and their own cursed lives。 Very well done, and it makes me want to add this author to my "Want to Read" least straightaway。 。。。more

3。5This short story was suspenseful and creepy, specially the ending!

This short story was perfect, it had the right pace, the right level of creepiness and a chef's kiss of an ending。 To be able to give us such a clear view of each character and their motivations in such a short story takes masterful writing。 Just when you thought you had it figured out, the story turned on its head, and that happened several times。 Just perfection。 This short story was perfect, it had the right pace, the right level of creepiness and a chef's kiss of an ending。 To be able to give us such a clear view of each character and their motivations in such a short story takes masterful writing。 Just when you thought you had it figured out, the story turned on its head, and that happened several times。 Just perfection。 。。。more

Werewolves are not my thing, but it definitely fits in with the Halloween vibes。 However some parts were boring which made the story feel longer than it really was。

I loved this story! Bravo! And a new author to check out!

A great end to the collection。 I pretty much guessed what it was about because of the cover and I’d have maybe preferred that wasn’t the case but I still enjoyed this one a lot。

This was all over the place。 I didn't care about the story or characters, basically skimmed through the book。 This was all over the place。 I didn't care about the story or characters, basically skimmed through the book。 。。。more

The usual fare。。。The usual assortment of monsters with a bit of a story worked in。 It seemed all creatures AKA monsters were represented。 But what about Nessie? And the Yeti/Big Foot? And La Llarona?Nothing exceptional about this one。 I dozed off and had to go back a few times。 Not a bad story。 But nothing that stands out。 Much like life ~

Jiminy Crickets, this was great。 The character development, the action, the climax, whew。 Tremendous short story。 This is the 3rd story from the collection and it was a tremendous ride。

& on it goesEven as a short story it has lots of twists & turns that keep you guessing。 The ending was a surprise

I enjoyed this one quite a bit。 It was a fun and exciting take on a classic horror tale that is definitely not foreshadowed on the cover or short story title。Plot: || Rachel, Sam, and their two kids live in a rural area that is serene and quiet。 That is, until they start to get hounded by a few predators, both inside the house as well as on the outside。 How will the family cope throughout the night? This short was the last I read in the creature feature collection。 It was a brisk read that held m I enjoyed this one quite a bit。 It was a fun and exciting take on a classic horror tale that is definitely not foreshadowed on the cover or short story title。Plot: || Rachel, Sam, and their two kids live in a rural area that is serene and quiet。 That is, until they start to get hounded by a few predators, both inside the house as well as on the outside。 How will the family cope throughout the night? This short was the last I read in the creature feature collection。 It was a brisk read that held my attention and delivered on building tension。 The characters back stories were strong, and I appreciated the level of depth that was taken to flesh them out, especially in a story under 60 some-odd-pages。 Even though the material may be familiar, I think it has enough to make it stand out in the collection。The book shines when it focuses on the kids。 They are fairly resourceful, cunning, and curious, which makes the semi-twist ending stand out。Overall, this was a fun collection to sift through。 Best of Luck was still my favorite, but each had its own high and low points。 Hopefully, in the future, we will get a full-on horror comedy。 That would be fantastic。Series Rating:1。tBest of Luck 2。tIt Waits in the Woods3。tIn Bloom4。tBig Bad5。tThe Pram6。tAnkle Snatcher 🎵| Soundtrack |🎵❖ Michael Jackson - Thriller ⭐ | Rating | ⭐❖ 3。5 out of 5P。S。 – Here is my Big Bad。 She kept me company throughout each of these short stories。 Anybody else read with their four-legged friends? 。。。more

This one didn’t do much for me。 The story line was average and I didn’t care for the ending。

2。5, really what it boils down to is sometimes a writer does everything fine, but just doesn’t connect with you。 This is a fine werewolf story that kind of tries to make it a divorce allegory。 Maybe I’m still resentful of Such Sharp Teeth, but it’s actually a really fun set up, with an efficient style of action writing。 Just not really my thing。

This was by far my favorite book from the Creature Feature collection (though I am biased toward a good werewolf story) this one was rife with unique and mysterious yet realistic characters and I couldn’t put it down it was such a roller coaster! Highly recommend this one

God, I tried to get through this mess。 Maybe it's me, I don't know; but the writing seemed so clunky and rushed at the same time。 Disappointed, there wasn't any hook to the story as well。 God, I tried to get through this mess。 Maybe it's me, I don't know; but the writing seemed so clunky and rushed at the same time。 Disappointed, there wasn't any hook to the story as well。 。。。more

Some families biteI have to be completely honest, this was not my favourite story from the six Amazon originals。 The first half of the story was slow and just couldn’t get my attention。 It’s a wonder I made it to half the story (of it would have been a book of 200 or 300 pages I’d probably have put it on the shelf, unfinished。But it’s the second half of the story that makes up for the first half! When the pace starts picking up and it becomes clear that in this family something is really amiss th Some families biteI have to be completely honest, this was not my favourite story from the six Amazon originals。 The first half of the story was slow and just couldn’t get my attention。 It’s a wonder I made it to half the story (of it would have been a book of 200 or 300 pages I’d probably have put it on the shelf, unfinished。But it’s the second half of the story that makes up for the first half! When the pace starts picking up and it becomes clear that in this family something is really amiss then you want to read more。 And you kind of feel and know what is going on but you want to know it all and see it being affirmed so you keep reading。Because in each family, something bites… and whether you keep it a secret or not, eventually the truth will out! 。。。more

Um, OK? Werewolf or What?I was confused on this book。 It was going good, but slow and then I got lost in the mix。 The Creature Feature Collection could have ended with a different story than this one。

I would give 1。5 stars for the plot alone, but I like the storytelling enough to give this story 3 stars in total。Very predictable as you can pretty much guess the whole plot based on the premise and the cover of this book。 The storytelling is what keeps it suspenseful from beginning to end。Nevertheless, this short story still intrigued me enough that I now want to check out another one in this series。 :)

This was a good final story to the Feature Creature collection。 I enjoyed the setup of this and how I kept second guessing what was going on。 4/5 stars!

Oh。 My。 God。 This was the best of these creature feature stories for sure! I was enthralled from beginning to end。 The twists kept coming and for a short story that is extremely impressive。 It was one of the longer short stories of this collection but there is not a wasted word。 Incredibly impressive piece of work by Chandler Baker。 Highly highly recommend!

This takes place in Eugene, Oregon, after an enormous mudslide of some kind that has wrecked a lot of places, so motel rooms are at a premium, and Harold is insistent。。。 and kind of creepy。Harold asks whether they’ve had trouble with wildlife moving into the populated areas, especially after this latest event。 Some, admits Sam。I thought I knew where this was going, and then I didn’t, and then I did, and I thoroughly enjoyed it。 The tension builds up chillingly and the characters interact well together, as we gradually see what’s happening。 “June is always the careful one, the scaredy cat, the one who warns Odie not to climb so high in the tree。 But tonight, June feels her sister’s fear coursing through the creases in Odie’s palms, and she knows that love can be just as terrifying as fear。”Excellent horror story I’m happy to recommend。 It’s one that doesn’t rely on grisly descriptions to be scary, although there is some blood, of course。 It’s suspense that always gets to me。Thanks to #NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for this copy from the #CreatureFeature Collection。 。。。more

This is a really good story。 Familiar tropes are tied into fresh originality in an engrossing tale。

This is the 2nd book in the Creature Feature collection that I picked up to read。 It starts out with a knock on the door and a stranger asking if Rachel is home。 He leaves only to keep coming back asking if she's home。 This gave a me a "Strangers" vibe and I was sure he was some sort of serial killer that out to get everyone。 Then you get feeling that the real villain is actually Rachel's husband how supposedly has her locked up in the basement。 Then the story begins to unfold and you realize it This is the 2nd book in the Creature Feature collection that I picked up to read。 It starts out with a knock on the door and a stranger asking if Rachel is home。 He leaves only to keep coming back asking if she's home。 This gave a me a "Strangers" vibe and I was sure he was some sort of serial killer that out to get everyone。 Then you get feeling that the real villain is actually Rachel's husband how supposedly has her locked up in the basement。 Then the story begins to unfold and you realize it's something else entirely。 Overall, this one was just fine。 It just didn't grab me。 It definitely fit within the Creature Feature motif (the cover and title give it away) but ultimately was just a decent story to listen to on my way to work。 。。。more
